Portrait Portfolio of work

  • Self Portrait
My intention was to create a self-portrait, a study of the character of my features, created in a mural form in clay. But, after weeks of work, suddenly in my mind I saw the portrait on a blurred strong linear background. The impact of the whole work seemed to be rising into the air in my imagination. I was seriously considering whether I should accept this element as part of the portrait or not. I could not ignore the new image as it added so much to the spirit of the portrait. I realized suddenly that the decision opened my mind to new and exciting possibilities.

  • Gwenallt
I was commissioned to create a portrait of Gwenallt. The experience of creating a portrait of Gwenallt was a very special one. Looking at many pictures of Gwenallt in advance, I felt that there was a strong expression in the face. He created a stir in me from the beginning. Reading his poetry about Wales was an additional stimulation. As a result, there is in this portrait a kind of a vision, and a strong expression is a profoundly important part of it. It appears as though it has been created intuitively, and under strong feeling.

  • Saunders Lewis
For years, it was my wish to create a portrait of Saunders Lewis. I was lucky enough to meet him face to face. I had designed a symbolic stage set for Blodeuwedd - one of his plays.

From the beginning, I felt that it was a great challenge. Before starting the work I had already seen a number of pictures of him and had read about him. I was amazed at his character, and I took particular note of the depth of his penetrating eyes. In this portrait I tried to express several layers of his character.

The spiritual vision

Looking back on my sculptures over the years, I now realize that the strongest and most important motivation for me to create a sculpture was receiving a spiritual vision in the mind. Usually, visions come to me like some intuition, when I suddenly see the presence of a nebulous image in my mind, an image that suggests a certain spiritual force. Then, the imagination responds to the spiritual presence of that image, and to other features that can be there, such as legendary, social or political features. The most extraordinary thing is that all these images arise as if from somewhere in my subconscious.
